Tronox Receives France Chimie Responsible Care® 2022 Energy Award

Dec 13, 2022 - Insights

An awards ceremony held on November 23, 2022, in Paris, France, unveiled the Responsible Care® 2022 reward recipients. The awards were presented to seven companies from 35 submitted at the national level.

Tronox’s Thann, France plant received the Energy Award, thanks to the sulfuric acid recycling unit that the site implemented last year. Recycling sulfuric acid in our manufacturing process is one way Tronox is reducing its overall waste to landfill – one of our key sustainability goals.

In 2021, the Thann plant opened a new recycling unit for sulfuric acid, which can recycle about 6,500 tons of sulfuric acid each year, reducing red gypsum deposits by about 13,000 tons per year. The recovered sulfuric acid undergoes a purification process that uses membrane filtration to separate out any remaining metals, then the remaining acid is put to reuse at our plant to process ore material to create TiO₂ pigment and ultrafine.

Not only does sulfuric acid recycling reduce our waste, but it also enables the Thann plant to reduce its carbon emissions by 3,000 tons per year.

Machiel Keegel, Managing Director – Europe and China; Jean-François Pasquier, Vice President, Specialty Products; Franck Navet, SHEQ Manager; Emmanuel Sibileau, Site Director; and Naheed Rehman, Product Stewardship Director, celebrate Tronox’s receipt of the Responsible Care® France Chimie Energy Award in November.
