Tronox Fairbreeze Mine Receives Amended EMPR Approval

Sep 13, 2012 - Press Releases

EMPANGENI, South Africa, Sept. 13, 2012 /PRNewswire/ — Tronox Limited (NYSE: TROX) today reported that the South African Department of Mineral Resources has approved its amendment application to the Environmental Management Program (EMPR) for its KZN Sands Fairbreeze mine project.  This, together with the National Environmental Management Act authorization received earlier this year, allows Tronox KZN Sands to commence with selected construction activities while awaiting further authorizations.

“The government’s approval of our EMPR application is an important milestone for the Fairbreeze project. When operational, the Fairbreeze mine will preserve more than 1,000 permanent and contractor positions and create an additional 1,000 indirect jobs during the construction phase of the project.  Approximately ZAR530 million will be spent annually on services and products, with more than half spent with black economic empowerment (BEE) companies,” said Trevor Arran, president of Tronox Mineral Sands.

Tronox KZN Sands is a significant contributor to the economy of the surrounding UThungulu district and one of the large industrial employers in the area. The Fairbreeze mine will replace the feedstock from the Hillendale mine which is ramping down production. The feedstock is required to sustain production at the company’s processing facility near Empangeni in KwaZulu-Natal. The EMPR approval is further good news to employees, contractors and communities benefiting from Tronox KZN Sands activities in the region.

Tronox is committed to environmental stewardship and sustainability in all aspects of its business operations.
