Ilmenite is a naturally occurring mineral comprised primarily of titanium iron oxide, as well as other elements such as magnesium and manganese. It is highly magnetic and can be isolated from other minerals by magnetic separators and other metallurgical separation processes. The TiO2 content of ilmenite ranges between 45-65 percent.
Sulphate-grade ilmenite can be further upgraded in a smelting process to produce titanium dioxide slag, or it can be used as a feedstock in the sulphate TiO2 pigment production process. Chloride grade ilmenite can be upgraded to synthetic rutile or it can be used as a feedstock by some chloride TiO2 pigment producers. All are used as feedstock for the production of titanium dioxide pigment and titanium metals
