Job creation and job preservation

The mining process at Fairbreeze will not be labour intensive. Skilled labour from

Hillendale mine will be employed at Fairbreeze for the operation phase, but there will be employment opportunities for local people, especially during construction.

During the construction period, a temporary construction labour force of approximately 1 080 workers, with varying skills levels, will be required.

Construction spending will create a further 1 800 jobs in the national economy.

Tronox will recruit construction workers with the co-operation of the surrounding traditional authorities.

Job preservation

The primary impact of the Fairbreeze project will be to preserve the current job opportunities related to the Tronox KZN Sands business.

The job opportunities that will be preserved by proceeding with the Fairbreeze project are:

  • ± 746 permanent employees
  • ± 300 permanent contractors
  • ± 1 000 indirect job impacts

Should Fairbreeze not proceed, all these jobs will be lost.
