News Release
Oklahoma City, Feb. 22, 2007 - Tronox Incorporated (NYSE: TRX, TRX.B) today announced its global titanium dioxide (TiO2) strategy to optimize assets by focusing on capturing opportunities presented by the company's chloride technology expertise, strong customer base and the rapid growth of the Asia-Pacific market.
Consistent with this strategy, on Feb. 13 Tronox announced plans to increase annual capacity at the Tiwest pigment plant by 40,000 to 50,000 tonnes, providing the opportunity for increased sales into the Asia-Pacific region where demand grew approximately 11% to 13% in 2006. The company estimates the total expansion cost will be in the range of $35 million to $45 million. The new capacity is expected to come on line in 2009. Tiwest is a 50/50 joint venture between Tronox Western Australia Pty Ltd and a subsidiary of Exxaro Resources Limited.
Also in line with its strategic objectives, Tronox's Botlek, Netherlands, chloride process TiO2 plant has demonstrated its ability to consistently run at higher rates of up to 90,000 tonnes. This increase above the previous stated 72,000-tonne capacity was achieved over several years through low-cost process improvements, improved uptime and debottlenecking, and was timed to meet the growing European market demands for high-quality chloride process pigment. The Botlek plant's organic growth contributed to the company's 1.6% production volume increase in 2006. In addition to meeting the growing chloride demands of the Asia-Pacific and European regions, an integral part of Tronox's global strategy will be a continued focus of resources, competencies and efforts dedicated to the Americas.
As it continues to execute on its strategic plan, Tronox will allocate resources and capital to capture opportunities presented by the company's strengths and expertise in chloride process technology and the growing Asia-Pacific market. As such, the company has hired investment banking firm Robert W. Baird & Co. to explore strategic options to optimize the value of Tronox's only sulfate process TiO2 plant, which is located in Uerdingen, Germany.
"Our 107,000-tonne capacity Uerdingen facility is world class, with talented employees who produce a very high-quality pigment demanded by many specialty markets," said Tom Adams, Tronox chairman and chief executive officer. "Although this is a valuable asset, it does not fit our present strategy. With a high level of interest shown in this asset, we are evaluating opportunities to optimize its value to Tronox."
